About The Show: This show is a non-stop blast, sci-fi horror comedy, love story and rock musical that has become one of the most treasured pieces of American musical theatre. Paying homage to doo-wop and Motown recordings, The story follows a luckless florist shop worker, Seymour, who raises a wisecracking carnivorous plant – Audrey II – that must feed on human blood. He delights in the fame and fortune that his ever-growing plant attracts, while trying to show his co-worker Audrey that she is the girl of his dreams. As Seymour discovers his prized possession getting out of control with the intent toward world domination, he learns the lesson: “Don’t feed the plants!”
Note: Open auditions are for anyone wanting to showcase their talent within the age group called for by the character descriptions. The TADA Theatre does not discriminate in any way and believes in diversity casting. It welcomes meeting new talent as well as seeing veteran actors all working towards the same goal of connecting our community with the positive power of theatre in a safe and creative environment.
Roles:
Seymour – Male who can play 25-35. Shy, a bit clumsy, unsure of himself and meek. Taking care of plants and learning about them are his joy. He is likable and well-meaning, but his naïveté often gets him into sticky situations. Strong actor and singer.
Audrey – Female who can play 25-35. Kind-hearted, a dreamer. She has a warped sense of self-worth from a painful past, but it does not define her. A life lived in Skid Row has not tarnished her ability to dream a way out of a desperate circumstance.
Mr. Mushnik – Male who can play 40-65. A struggling flower shop owner with a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Nosy, father figure to Seymour. Brutally honesty and hard on his employees. Profit-driven.
Orin Scrivello – Male who can play 30-40. Audrey’s Dentist boyfriend. He is arrogant and finds pleasure in causing pain as well as abusing nitrous oxide.
Voice of the Plant (Audrey II) – Actor/vocalist located offstage. Larger than life, their voice carries wondrous weight and presence. They ooze the rhythm and blues. The Plant is very persuasive and excels at getting what it wants. Has excellent funky R&B vocal chops.
The Plant Puppeteers (Audrey II) – 18+. A non-speaking puppeteer (experience not required) who manipulates various stages of the plant as it gets bigger. Strong physical acting skills and the ability to portray character and emotion purely through movement. Has stamina to operate the large, heavy final puppet.
Crystal, Ronnette, and Chiffon aka The Street Urchins – 3 Females who can play 18-30. Street-styled girl group with infectious energy and confidence. They are the light and soul of Skid Row who can sing well and know it. They are the no-nonsense driving force of the story; essentially a funky Greek chorus who comment on the action and have the strongest grip on reality.
Ensemble – Variety of ages. 6-8 singers who will perform such great roles as: Skid Row Residents, Mr. Bernstein, Mrs. Luce, Snip Snip, and Patrick Martin.
